Since its publication back in 1970 and 1980, the work has received numerous acknowledgements and appreciations from various international institutions and experts. It captures the names of all inhabited places within Moravia and Silesia – cities, towns, villages, rural farms and solitary inhabited places, castles and ancient fortresses, and disappeared settlements. Every entry contains a detailed historical specification of the place name since the first record till today, followed by the linguistic explanation of name’s origin and evolution. Variations of the place name as present in local dialects are provided whenever available. Individual entries also incorporate brief information and data related to the local history. The new edition offers numerous amendments by Rudolf Šrámek, the co-author of the publication, which add new up-to-date information to some entries while a couple of new entries have been created and added to the original scope of the publication.

Description: This work by František Šujan describes a time period during the Thirty Years’ War in which Brno was besieged by the Swedish army led by the invincible Lennart Thorstenson. It also portrays the heroic defense of the inhabitants of Brno under the leadership of general Jean-Louis Raduit de Souche. Thanks to its sobriety and accuracy, the writing is fascinating even despite its age (it was first published in 1897). On a few pages and exempt from any baroque adornments and clichés, the author provides the reader with a concise chronical view on a 120-day-long period (from 3 May to 23 August 1646) in which the town of Brno was besieged by a cruel Swedish enemy with a twentyfold numerical superiority. The text is accompanied by brief descriptions of the time periods before and after the besiegement and by a detailed map. The main sources for this book were two diaries written directly in the besieged town, which were thoroughly verified by the author and compared with information available in Swedish chronicles. The up-to-date edition contains also a list of 22 honored members of the town council and 317 citizens, or their widows, who took part in the heroic defense of the town.

The chapters are not dryasdust history, but they express author´s confession of the admiration and the reverence to the people of his native village.
